Pedagogy Proposal

Sphere International School operates with the commitment of developing leaders, people who are conscious of their role in society and capable of generating positive change, making the world more humane, just and kind. The foundations for solid education in this sense are supported by self-management and appreciation for knowledge, true pillars for the creation of a meaningful, lasting and continuous learning path.

In order to do this, the methodology foundation starts from the educational movement anchored in the stimulation of curiosity, in the inquiry guided by projects structured to develop critical thinking, and in the unfolding of significant learning.  This environment allows students to process knowledge and find support in self-management, as well as in solid principles and values, developing their own agency in the world:  a conscious and responsible attitude towards their own learning process and the way they relate with the different contexts around them, both locally and globally.

The pedagogical proposal comes to life in a multicultural environment, filled with diversity in different perspectives, using collaboration as a prerequisite for applying different methodologies, and favoring learning in relation to the development of each student’s education as a whole. In line with such a multicultural and diverse environment, Sphere promotes an appreciation for integration, utilization, communication, and development of diverse learning methods.

Finally, at the heart of this project lies the ideal of contributing to the construction of a true culture of peace, facilitating the development of citizen awareness and democratic values, respect of differences, tolerance, and coexistence with diverse cultures.  This ideal favors intercultural living, promoting dialogue and the exercise of unity in diversity experienced inside our school and in society.  Essentially, these are the key elements that sustain our individuality, the community we share, a society with a wide scope, and our shared planet.

The curricular organization for the development of such a unique project is structured by integrating the Brazilian national curriculum, references from UNESCO for education, and the premises of the international curriculum from IB (International Baccalaureate).   With the references presented, the political and pedagogical project aims at a academically rigorous curriculum and the development of an international mindset for its students and for the school community.  In this setting we establish the bilingual education (Portuguese and English) offered at Sphere.

Based on the concept for Sphere, the pedagogical proposal comprises five guiding principles:

II - Academic rigor and complexity in the integration of the Brazilian and International curricula adopted by the school:

The quest for the most effective learning process and the assurance that every student obtains the best education, guiding each student to develop his/her full potential.

The curriculum is organized in concepts and, by the means of inquiry translates the complexity and academic rigor.  The structure integrates not only school content, but also concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and community work.

The Brazilian curriculum (BNCC) and the reference of the IB’s international curriculum are integrated in one single curriculum at Sphere, organized, in essence, by using projects.

III - Teaching for understanding and diversity: meaningful learning.

The starting point for Sphere is that people are different, they learn in different ways, and have specific interests. We work with the premise of diverse classes in the broad sense of learning.

Concepts and content are developed in a way to allow individual and team work. Classes provide for diversity using unique teaching styles, workstations, projects, and active participation of students, who take a lead role in the learning process.

The teaching methodology and curricular organization support the current practice that helps the student to understand, to establish relationships, and act using projects, diverse activities, unique instruction, thought routines, and rigorous assessments.

IV – Bilingual Education and Intercultural Awareness

Portuguese and English bilingual education contextualizes the assumptions of diversity, multiculturalism and intercultural awareness present in the philosophical and pedagogical conception of the school, effectively offering a universal language to students from Childhood education, in a context of immersion, as well as additional language of instruction from different disciplines in the school curriculum.

V - Continuing Teacher Development

Our teaching staff is in continuous process of development in the diverse areas related to Sphere’s pedagogy.  Weekly meetings for planning and sharing, participation in IB seminars and conferences, active participation in the international seminars promoted by Sphere, and presentations of research, workshops and lectures by the Sphere team in educational seminars and conferences.



Early Childhood

Students age 2 to 5 years-old

Centered on social skills and the full achievement of each child’s creative potential, expanding social relationships and interaction within an environment of play based activities using diverse resources.

Educação Infantil

Elementary and Middle School

The Elementary and Middle School has the objective of developing the students’ cognitive, affective, physical, ethical, and social abilities and competences.

The work developed throughout the 9 years of this Elementary and Middle school provides a selected age-appropriate content by subject, according to each grade, with the Brazilian and international references integrated within the Sphere curriculum.

Ensino Fundamental

Elementary School

Students aged 6 to 10 years-old

The curriculum is structured with projects and organizes all key concepts and content for each grade, from Years 1 to 5.  Students are encouraged to investigate the central ideas that direct each unit, so knowledge is contextualized and working with research strategies, promoting active and critical attitude from students in the learning process.


Middle School

Students age 11 to 14 years-old

In this stage, the curriculum is structured with projects of one single subject as well as with interdisciplinary projects, coordinated by specialist teachers of each area, both in Portuguese and English.  In Year 6, the Spanish language becomes part of the curriculum and that is also when   mentoring with a guidance counselor begins, ensuring individual monitoring and educational support, complementing the process for the full development of each student.  Projects within the community and the Year 9 Personal Project, consolidate the development path of this phase.


High School

Students age 15 to 17 years-old

High school is part of the continuous in international, bilingual education provided by Sphere International School, in addition to the essential studies demanded by the Brazilian National Curriculum.   In order to consolidate the intellectual, physical, emotional and ethical development, project Sphere integrates academic rigor, flexibility and creativity, observing customized, individual learning paths, individual research projects, and International certification. Counseling and individualized educational orientation ensure the orientation and support for students in life, whether they continue their studies in Brazil or abroad.
